What Is Mechanical System Work?

Mechanical system work covers the piping, ductwork, tanks, HVAC, and mechanical equipment that bring a heavy-industrial building to life after the steel is up. For Colony, mechanical scope ranges from carbon-steel and stainless process piping (CO2, water, slurry, chemicals) to plant HVAC ducting, fire-protection mains, tank fabrication and installation, and the structural supports that carry every line. Done well, mechanical work integrates seamlessly with the building structure; done poorly, it generates field conflicts and missed milestones.

Because Colony self-performs both the structural steel and the mechanical scope on most of our projects, the welder running a CSA-stamped beam connection on one shift can be running a process pipe spool the next. Our shops fabricate piping and tankage, and our field crews install and pressure-test them to CSA B51 and ASME B31.3 process piping standards. The result is fewer interfaces, fewer change orders, and a tighter overall schedule.

Our Mechanical System Work Process

1. Step 1 – Mechanical Detailing & Coordination: Our engineers and detailers route piping, ductwork, and equipment supports against the structural model before fabrication, eliminating field conflicts.
2. Step 2 – Shop Fabrication & Field Install: Pipe spools, tankage, and mechanical assemblies are shop-fabricated under controlled QA, shipped to site, and installed by Colony crews integrated with the structural erection sequence.
3. Step 3 – Testing, NDE & Turnover: Colony performs pressure testing, NDE (RT/MT/PT), and prepares the mechanical turnover package – pressure-test charts, weld maps, MTRs – for handover to commissioning.
