Colony Construction delivers a full spectrum of steel construction services across Canada, combining more than 40 years of field experience with the engineering depth, fabrication capacity, and project management discipline required on modern industrial and commercial builds. Since 1985, we have completed over 700 projects spanning mining sites in the North, hydroelectric facilities in remote river valleys, oil and gas developments in Alberta, sawmills and manufacturing plants across British Columbia, and aviation, agriculture, and recreation facilities from coast to coast. Our clients work with us because we bring every capability a steel project needs under a single-source provider – one accountable team from concept through commissioning.
The nine services listed below are designed as complementary capabilities rather than siloed offerings. Pre-engineered steel buildings deliver speed and cost certainty for straightforward structures. Conventional steel construction handles complex, custom, heavy-load projects where standard kits cannot meet the engineering demands. Hybrid steel solutions combine both approaches on projects that need the economy of pre-engineered shells with the strength of conventional framing for specific bays, mezzanines, or crane zones. Behind each build, our in-house engineering and detailing team produces the shop drawings, connection designs, and erection plans that keep fabrication and field crews aligned.
Specialized components round out the portfolio. Open-web steel joists give us long-span efficiency for warehouses, arenas, and industrial floors. Cladding and roofing systems seal the envelope with panels, insulation, and trim selected for Canadian climate extremes. Structural components – cranes, mezzanines, equipment supports, and platforms – integrate with the primary structure to handle the loads that process equipment, material handling, and maintenance operations require. Doors, glazing, and hangar doors close out the building with products sized for aviation, industrial, and commercial openings. And when a client wants the entire project delivered by one partner, our design-build service consolidates design, engineering, fabrication, and erection under a single contract with a single schedule and a single point of accountability.

Frequently Asked Questions
What construction services does Colony Construction offer?
Colony offers eleven services: pre-engineered steel buildings, conventional steel construction, hybrid steel solutions, engineering & detailing, open-web steel joists, cladding & roofing systems, structural components (bridge cranes, mezzanines, equipment supports), doors / glazing / hangar doors, design-build, self-perform steel erection, and mechanical system work (process piping, HVAC, tanks). Every service is delivered in-house under one accountable team.
Does Colony Construction do both design AND construction?
Yes. Colony is a design-build contractor with in-house engineering, steel fabrication, and erection crews. Clients get one partner responsible for structural design, detailing, fabrication, and installation - eliminating the scope-gap risk of split engineer-of-record / general-contractor arrangements.
Is pre-engineered steel or conventional steel construction better for my project?
Pre-engineered buildings (PEB) are faster and lower-cost for warehouses, distribution centers, and simple industrial shells (16 to 28 week schedules, to per sq ft range). Conventional steel construction handles heavier loads, custom layouts, and complex industrial facilities - mills, power plants, data centers. Colony engineers and delivers both; we'll recommend the right approach based on your program.
What certifications does Colony carry?
Colony's fabrication and erection is CWB-certified under CSA W47.1 for structural steel welding, compliant with CSA S16 steel-construction and CSA W59 welded-steel standards, and CISC member (Canadian Institute of Steel Construction). US work follows AISC / AWS D1.1 standards.
