Colony Construction delivers forestry construction services across Canada, building sawmills, planer mills, kiln buildings, chip storage, and mill-site infrastructure for the country’s largest forest products companies. From the BC Interior to Quebec and Atlantic Canada, our steel goes up fast, performs under heavy dust and snow loads, and meets the fire-code requirements of modern wood processing facilities.

Forestry Construction Expertise

Since 1985, Colony Construction has completed more than 700 projects across Canada, and forestry has been a consistent sector throughout our history. We have built and expanded sawmills, planer mills, kiln complexes, shipping and warehouse buildings, chip and hog-fuel storage, and mechanical and electrical buildings for some of the country’s largest forest products producers, including Interfor and West Fraser.

Colony Construction at a forestry site

Our understanding of mill operations – the dust, the vibration, the equipment loads, and above all the shutdown windows – means our buildings are detailed to serve production, not fight it. Whether we are erecting a new greenfield sawmill or squeezing a capital upgrade into a two-week planned shutdown, we bring the fabrication capacity, the crews, and the project management discipline needed to finish on time.

Colony fabricates to CSA S16, CSA W59, and the CISC Code of Standard Practice, and our designs routinely accommodate NFPA 664-informed dust collection, high ceiling heights for stackers and sorters, deep snow loads common in the BC Interior and Northern Ontario, and heavy equipment vibration isolation. Every sawmill is slightly different – different log sizes, different equipment lineup, different dust and fire strategy – so we detail every building from scratch rather than force-fitting a generic shell around the process.

Our forestry portfolio extends beyond primary lumber into OSB and MDF plants, pellet plants, bioenergy facilities, value-added wood product manufacturing, and forest-products warehouses. The same engineering, fabrication, and erection disciplines carry across all of these, with each sub-sector bringing its own dust, combustion, and equipment considerations into the design.

Our Services for Forestry

Challenges We Solve for Forestry Clients

Remote Mill Locations

Many Canadian sawmills are hours from the nearest urban centre. Colony plans fabrication and shipping around the logistics realities of single-lane bridges, gravel access, and long trucking hauls, sequencing deliveries so erection crews stay productive.

Tight Shutdown Windows

Capital upgrades inside operating mills usually happen during a planned two-to-four-week shutdown. We pre-fabricate, pre-paint, and dry-fit major assemblies in the shop so that field work during a turnaround is measured in shifts, not weeks.

Dust and Fire Codes

Wood processing generates combustible dust, and modern mills are designed to NFPA 664-informed standards with explosion venting, dust collection framing, and fire-rated separations. Colony’s detailing integrates these systems into the primary structure rather than bolting them on after the fact.

Heavy Equipment Loads

Sorters, stackers, planers, and edgers impose heavy static and dynamic loads on mill structures. Our engineering and detailing team coordinates directly with equipment suppliers so that crane girders, platforms, and anchor patterns match the machinery being installed.

Seasonal Constraints

Northern mill sites have short summer construction windows and long cold winters. We plan steel fabrication to deliver in the right sequence for the season, and we field-erect with cold-weather procedures when projects must push through winter.

Forestry Projects

Interfor Adams Lake Sawmill

Interfor Adams Lake Sawmill

Colony supplied structural steel for Interfor’s Adams Lake sawmill in the BC Interior, one of Canada’s most productive softwood lumber operations. The project required disciplined coordination with mill operations to keep production running during construction.

West Fraser Quesnel Sawmill

West Fraser Quesnel Sawmill

At West Fraser’s Quesnel sawmill, Colony delivered structural steel supporting mill upgrades and expanded production capacity. The work illustrated our ability to detail steel around installed equipment and service the tight schedules that characterize mill capital projects.

Where We Build for Forestry

Colony ships forestry construction across the major Canadian wood-products regions, from BC’s softwood heartland to the OSB belt of Northern Ontario and Quebec and the mills of the Maritimes.

Frequently Asked Questions – Forestry Construction

What kinds of forestry buildings does Colony construct?

Colony builds sawmills, planer mills, kiln buildings, chip and hog-fuel storage structures, shipping warehouses, MCC buildings, and maintenance shops. Our work spans greenfield mill builds and brownfield expansions inside operating facilities.

Can Colony design around combustible dust requirements?

Yes. Our engineering and detailing team integrates dust collection supports, explosion venting framing, and fire-rated separations into the primary steel, working with client fire protection engineers to meet NFPA 664-informed design intent.

How does Colony manage work inside an operating sawmill?

We plan brownfield work around client shutdowns, pre-fabricate assemblies in our shop, and coordinate daily with mill operations to keep impact on production to a minimum. Our site crews are experienced working around live equipment and production traffic.

Can Colony accommodate heavy snow loads for BC Interior and Northern Ontario mills?

Yes. Our roof framing for mill sites is regularly designed for 4 kPa and higher ground snow loads, with appropriate drift, sliding, and unbalanced load patterns per the National Building Code and provincial amendments.

Does Colony coordinate with equipment suppliers on anchor patterns and tolerances?

Absolutely. Mill equipment anchor patterns, crane rail tolerances, and platform elevations are coordinated with the equipment supplier early in the detailing process so that the steel matches the machinery on day one.

Can Colony deliver a full sawmill building on a fast-track schedule?

Yes. On a design-build basis we can overlap engineering, fabrication, and erection, which typically shortens schedule by weeks to months compared with traditional design-bid-build delivery.
